The Latest News from the ASTRA Crew
The ASTRA club of El Camino Jr. High recently put together over 50 toiletry bags for the homeless. In addition to the hygiene essentials, students included handwritten and hand decorated cards in the toiletry bags. These bags will be donated to the Salvation Army. The ASTRA club was given a generous donation of toiletry supplies, and raised money to purchase other necessary items for this project.

MONTH OF MARCH 2018
The Latest News from the ASTRA Crew
Since returning to school in January, the ASTRA students have been quite busy. A few days after we returned to school, the ASTRA board members decided to donate 50 toiletry bags to Kiwanis, who transported supplies to victims of the mudslides in Montecito.
We held a fund raiser on January 26 during El Camino Jr. High’s Rewards Day. Rewards Day is an event that is held 3 times a year where students who are on track to graduate and have not been in serious trouble are celebrated with an hour of food, fun, and friends. Rewards Day is also an opportunity for clubs and sports teams to fundraise. This time, ASTRA sold ice cream sandwiches for Rewards Day. We made $152! Not bad for an hour’s worth of work!
ASTRA also hosted a table at the No One Eats Alone Day event. This is a national movement that aims to shed light on the issue of youth isolation in school. At this event, each student hosts a table, where they invite others to join them, to show they are not alone, and to promote a positive, inclusive environment.
For Valentine’s Day, the ASTRA students decided to show their love and appreciation for the noon duty aides and custodial staff on campus. We wrote thank you cards (for keeping our school safe and clean), and assembled goody bags with some sweet treats.
On February 28, ASTRA students performed a campus clean-up. We picked up a surprising amount of trash on our campus. But now, El Camino looks sparkling clean.
Our upcoming projects include a Nurse’s Appreciation Day gift, and Homeless Toiletry Kits.

MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2017
For the last 2 weeks, the ASTRA students have been busy making "Police Officer Appreciation Bags" filled with mini water bottles, granola bars, and candy. The kids recognize that police officers often work on holidays, sacrificing time with their families to keep our communities safe. Yesterday, the ASTRA board members went to deliver their Appreciation Bags, and got a tour of the new SMPD station from Officer Nate Totorica. The kids were so thrilled to be able to meet staff and officers while handing out their goodies.
MONTH OF OCTOBER 2017
On the evening of October 10, the El Camino Jr. High School ASTRA club installed it's newly elected board officers, and installed it's club members. Four of the five board officers are returning to their leadership roles; Alondra Cabrera (President), Isabel Euloio (Vice President), Dulce Lopez (Secretary), and Rafael Sanchez (Member at Large). Joining the board officers is newly elected Treasurer, Diana Jarquin. All five of the board officers are 8th graders, whose knowledge of the school and the ASTRA club will help make 2017-2018 a very successful year.
After a lovely ceremony officiated by Altrusa of Golden Valley President Barbara Fleming, the ASTRA board officers gave heartfelt speeches to demonstrate their passion for helping others. Although these kids are barely teenagers, their leadership skills definitely showed!
To conclude the installation ceremony, we celebrated with prizes and snacks, both of which were donated by generous members of the Altrusa of Golden Valley club. Some in attendance walked away with prizes and full stomachs, but most importantly, all went away with happy hearts and a sense of eagerness to help in their community.
